An educated, engaged, and focused board is critical to the success of any Santa Clara County arts organization. To advance its mission, an organization must gather the right board, provide them with the right tools, and leverage their talent, resources, and expertise.

SVCREATES, in partnership with the Center for Excellence in Nonprofits (CEN), will provide a full day of sessions for board members, executives, and staff on board recruitment, fundraising for board members, strategic thinking, and engaging with artistic mission. Board members and arts leaders are encouraged to attend together. Attendees will be eligible to apply for one-on-one board coaching from CEN.

A peer panel will discuss the opportunities and challenges of involving arts boards in the artistic process—sharing ideas, best practices, and considerations from arts leaders. Experts from CEN will present strategies for effective board meetings. Breakout sessions will also be offered on the following topics:

Stronger: An effective board recognizes its present and future needs and develops processes to ensure an ongoing, healthy board. Participants will learn ways to identify what board talent their organizations need to achieve their impact goals and practical ways to find and develop board talent.

Smarter: What most board members don’t realize is that the smallest part of fundraising is asking for money—fundraising is all about relationship building. Participants will explore ways to effectively strengthen the relationship between their organizations and their donors. Tools will be offered to help board members identify how they can support fundraising in their role with the organization.

Strategic: In today’s fast-paced world, a typical strategic plan that sits on a shelf in between revisions no longer meets the needs of most nonprofit organizations. Instead, organizations need to develop the ability to continuously think and act strategically. Participants will explore various approaches to strategic planning and how to make strategic thinking an integral part of how their boards do business.

To join us, please register. If you can’t make the full day, you are welcome to come for just part of the day. Have questions about this event? Contact Audrey Struve.
